Meet Katie

Welcome to Hovel Sweet Digital! I’m Katie, the founder of Hovel Sweet Digital.

I started freelancing as a way to help small businesses solve their digital marketing needs.

I love working behind the scenes. I specialize in self-hosted WordPress CMS websites. I’ve been using Elementor and the Kadence theme to customize pages. These tools enable me to create uniquely designed websites, tailored to my client’s needs.

I believe a website is where you connect with your audience. Having a strategic and purposeful web presence is what will set you apart from competitors.

Education

I started my higher education with an associate’s degree for IT. I landed a job working at a help desk, helping older people (the average age was 60 at the company I worked for) use their computers. As much as I enjoyed solving other people’s problems, this job afforded me to be able to pay for my next degree.

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee with a dual bachelors degree in Information Science and Creative Writing. I know, I know, creative writing and I’ve never written a book. But I have been into blogging as a hobby since my university days. In fact, that’s where I found my love of travel. I joined a study abroad trip to South Korea and Japan, visiting several universities and libraries.

After my undergrad, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I didn’t want to write full time and I wasn’t keen on becoming a librarian (too many people, eek). So I decided to go back for a Master’s degree. I did, however, use my writing to begin a travel blog.

I enrolled in a specialist program, also at UWM, with a focus on archival studies. And again, never found a position that I was interested in.

In 2016, I married my husband, moved across the country and landed in Texas. My first job here was working on a private school’s website, email program, and social media accounts. I loved it. But I hated the drive.

In 2018, I found a job closer to our home (only a 10 minute drive!) where I managed email programs for many nonprofit organizations. We would run dedicated campaigns throughout the year with various landing pages and donation pages for their fundraising needs. I also expanded my digital marketing skills by running Google Ads, Facebook and Instagram Ads, and display marketing for my clients.

After the dreadful pandemic, I realized that I loved working from home (and that I can get more done without sitting in traffic). I landed a remote job and I haven’t looked back.

I began offering freelance services in 2022, wanting to help people that can’t afford the prices of the large agencies I’ve worked for in the past. I help these clients manage their websites, create new websites, run email marketing programs and various other tasks.
